The Art & Design Department
You don’t make a photograph just with a camera. You bring to the act of photography all the pictures you have seen, the books you have read, the music you have heard, the people you have loved. — Ansel Adams
All Year 9 pupils at Peponi School study Art and Design. The pupils are exposed to a wide a spectrum of media o allow them to experience many fields in this subject, so that they may find their own direction and build confidence in themselves using visual communication. Often, what cannot be said, finds an outlet in art.
We aim to cover as many of these areas as possible throughout the year:
- Painting and Related Media
- Graphic Design
- History of Art
- Textile Design
Peponi School offers CIE IGCSE Art and Design, which consists of component 1, an 8 hour controlled test and component 4, coursework that begins at the end of Year 10 and must be completed early on in Year 11. The coursework options are varied and self-driven, allowing pupils to explore and experiment in their specific areas of interest.
There are additional options available at this level; component 1 can be taken with component 2, which is a Design Assignment or component 1 can be taken with component 3, which is a critical and historical component for those who have strong writing skills.
In the Sixth Form, pupils follow the Edexcel Art and Design syllabus. The course consists of two papers: a coursework paper which also contains a written paper that carries 12% of the weighting and an examination paper. The practical is provided by the examination board in February of each academic year; a specific starting point is provided in the form of themes with recommendations on approaches to meeting the requirements of this paper through a series of preparatory studies. A total of ten hours is provided to complete a final outcome.
