The Humanities Faculty

The adequate study of culture, our own and those on the opposite side of the globe, can press on to fulfilment only as we learn today from the humanities as well as from the scientists. — Ruth Benedict

The Peponi School Humanities pupils are, by design, exposed to a wide variety of experiences either through tours and excursions, electronically or in theory; thereby enabling them to get insights into what goes on in other parts of the world. This enables them to be more appreciative of their own world and to be tolerant of circumstances, beliefs, cultures and ethos that are different from their own while at the same time being able to understand why things happen the way they do.

The pupil is adequately equipped to be in a position to look for information from different sources, and is empowered to understand it, to analyse it logically and conclusively and to present findings orally and in writing. This prepares them to face a world where research is crucial for progress, where problem-solving is an everyday requirement and where the hunger for good leadership is overbearing.

Our aim as a department is to develop a pupil who not only sees but appreciates; who not only hears but listens; who not only looks but sees; who not only asks but questions; and one who not only says but expresses themselves.

The Peponi School Humanities Faculty product is therefore not only more knowledgeable but also more self-confident, more independent, a better citizen, leader, manager, entrepreneur, worker, traveller, family member and human being.

The Peponi School Humanities Faculty comprises of six main subjects:

Geography, History and Religious Studies are offered as compulsory subjects in Shell (Year 9) and as optional ones from Fifth Form (Year 10 and 11) all the way up to Upper Sixth Form. Business Studies is available as an option from Lower Fifth (Year 10) all the way to Sixth Form, while Economics and Psychology are offered as beginners courses at AS Level with pupils progressing to the full A Level if they so wish. For more information on each subject click on each bullet above.

The Humanities Faculty follows different exam boards according to the subjects offered. Geography, History, Economics and Psychology work with CIE at both IGCSE and A Level.  Religious Studies is taught following the Edexcel syllabuses at both IGCSE and A Level. Business Studies is currently transitioning from CIE to Edexcel at IGCSE; however, follows CIE at A Level.

Achievements

The Humanities Faculty is the broadest unit within the institution bringing together 7 subjects namely Business Studies, Economics, Geography, History, Psychology, Religious Studies and our newest kid on the block Sociology. Over the years, the faculty has enjoyed celebratory successes in O-IGCSE and GCE examinations. Our exemplary achievement is attributed to;

  • A warm, cordial and harmonious relationship between members of the faculty,
  • The overwhelming support the faculty gets from the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) of the school,
  • A strong team of professionals that the faculty is endowed with,
  • Availability of resources needed for effective pedagogy,
  • A hard working pupils’ body who are ever willing to be stretched,
  • Opportunity that has been granted to teachers to plan, organise and execute educational trips within and across the borders.

In cementing the last bullet point above, the faculty is celebrated for conduct successful educational trips that stimulates pupils interest enabling them to lock the already learnt theory in class, with the reality observed and studied on the ground. Field study trips are organized by the Geography, History, Economics and Business arms of the faculty for the Shell, Fifth and the Sixth forms. These trips are carefully planned, networked and encompasses all teaching fraternity within the faculty and once in a while other faculties within the school.

Over the past 3 years, trips within the faculty have transcended international borders with pupils enjoying traversing destinations such as, Germany, France, Russia, Finland, Estonia, Poland, Sweden, United Arab Emirates and recently China. From the international tours, it is evident that the trips have helped to stimulate pupils’ interest many of whom have posted excellent IGCSE and GCE History results.
