Sports
Peponi House school has a large and vibrant sports department. The department is made up of well qualified teachers and specialist coaches who deliver P.E., games, swimming and tennis lessons. The department prides itself on encouraging all pupils to participate fully in lessons. Through a range of physical activities, pupils develop improved skill levels, self-esteem, interdependence and knowledge of health matters.
Promoting an awareness of how strength, speed, flexibility and stamina affect performance underpins many of the activities studied. Pupils are also expected to be able to evaluate theirs and others' performances in order to enhance their understanding of the activity at hand. Our philosophy is to instil a positive attitude towards sport and physical activity by giving each pupil as much experience and information as possible to enable them to make their own decisions regarding physical activity later in life.
It is expected that everyone will enjoy and be fully engaged in all P.E and games lessons. All pupils are expected to do their very best regardless of natural ability, and are encouraged to work hard to master new skills. They work at a level of difficulty that is relevant to them with monitored progression and the aim of achieving personal bests. Through this they will develop physical confidence, recognition and a positive attitude towards healthy living and exercise.
Peponi House has well maintained sports grounds and facilities. We have three all-weather tennis courts, four cricket nets, a 25 metre six lane heated swimming pool with a large viewing area, a sports pavilion and five large multi-purpose sports pitches. Our team of grounds staff take great pride in making sure our pitches are maintained to the highest standards. The department stocks a large amount of specialist equipment. However, our greatest asset is our team of committed coaching staff who teach games lessons. A number of our coaches have represented Kenya in international competitions and bring with them a huge amount of technical skill and expertise. Working with ‘the best’ is a huge privilege for our children and one they greatly enjoy and value.
Our team of staff is committed to developing sport across the school and providing opportunities for pupils to work on their skills outside the school day; swimming and tennis squads, late practices for minor sports and ‘academies’ are run after school and during weekends and holidays. A good number of our pupils leave Peponi House having gained a Sports Scholarship to their next educational establishment.
There are fiercely contested Inter-House competitions, as well as a comprehensive and busy schedule of Inter-School fixtures against other Kenyan preparatory schools in each term. Peponi House teams are a regular feature at most Inter-School festival and tournament semi-finals and finals. Peponi House hosts annual hockey, football and tennis tournaments. Many of our Under 13 pupils are selected to represent the Nairobi Schools Team across the board in the major team sports. We are particularly strong at cross country, hockey, football, tennis and swimming, winning the IAPS events regularly. Parental support is much appreciated at all matches and tournaments.
