We are proud to say in the Peponi House science department that children exude enthusiasm and awe about what they learn. The philosophy behind science teaching at our school is: ‘If you cannot see it….be it!’ This encourages enquiry, modelling and practical work to be an integral part of our lessons.

In the junior department (Years 2, 3 and 4), play and discovery are the foremost objectives for the pupils’ learning. It is a common sight to see the junior pupils exploring the school’s plants and butterflies and doing ‘human being’ tests on the older pupils. In Years 2-3 we study: Habitats, Healthy Me, Magnets and Forces among other topics that run alongside the KS1 and KS2 British National Curriculum. From the end of Year 3 through Year 4 we develop depth to our understanding of previous topics and move onto topics such as Materials and Electricity. By the time the pupils have reached the end of Year 4 they have covered the equivalent of KS1 and KS2 of the British National Curriculum.

In Year 5, science lessons move into the senior laboratories. These are spacious, well-equipped ICT centralised learning spaces where investigation and modelling are at the core of learning. The Year 5 curriculum is based upon Cells, Particles and Interdependence. Each topic is designed around an investigation and the objectives that are met run closely in line with the requirements of the ISEB 11+ syllabus.

In Years 6, 7 and 8 we teach to the requirements of the ISEB 13+ Common Entrance syllabus. We start this in Year 6 to give time to cover all requirements of the syllabus while allowing ourselves to look at more intricate science beyond the curriculum and have fun while learning the course. Although the pupils are taught the different disciplines of science (Biology, Chemistry and Physics) at this level, they are taught in topics. We feel this gives the best opportunity for the child to reinforce understanding of a particular topic over a given period of time.

Year 6 is designed to introduce the 13+ objectives and the pupils learn their science at a pace that is commensurate with their age. In Year 7 children will learn the majority of topics, covering the course. In Year 8 the topics have been designed to link up learning from previous topics to embed a deeper understanding of the science involved. 

Scientists are renowned for calling the world their playground of discovery. To be able to teach science from the ‘playground’ of Kenya is truly superb and our aim is to embed this inspiration through our teaching.
